Tips for a Smooth Move by Safely Packing the Fragile Items

In our home, we all have fragile objects, which we must know how to store so that they do not suffer any damage in the event of a move, and for this reason, we want to give you some safety tips to pack the most delicate objects and leave them ready for the day to transport them.

Here are our simple tips for packing your fragile items and keeping them safe:

–      Prepare in advance: A move is not an easy thing; it requires planning and time, which is why, prior to moving, it is essential to organize and prepare to pack those valuable crystals, porcelain and other fragile items. If you are not hiring movers, start well in advance of moving day and take the time to properly pack these items.

–    Have the specific materials: quality moving boxes in various sizes; packing paper, bubble wrap, flexible cardboard, scissors and packing tape will be our great allies so that our fragile objects arrive safely at their destination. In addition, it would be helpful to work on a large table to place and pack your items more comfortably.

–     Label: Having the boxes with your delicate items properly labeled as “fragile” will help the movers to handle them with more care, and know that they should not carry heavy objects on top.

–      Know what items to pack and how to pack them correctly. Although a modern TV and a family antique are different items, they are both fragile items, and each has their own way of handling them when it comes to packing. Do your research on the best way to pack each item, and plan ahead so you do not run out of bubble wrap on moving day.

How to pack the most popular fragile items:

First, we must make sure that the bottom of the boxes is well padded, regardless of what we are going to place; this will prevent damage from possible blows that may occur during transport.

‍Dishes: Whether it is grandmother’s old crockery or everyday dishes, these utensils must be taken care of to reach our new home intact and start our home routine again immediately, therefore, the dishes must be packed vertically in boxes according to their size, lined with crumpled packing paper on the bottom and top, and wrapping each dish in bubble wrap and tape. For added safety, place paper between the plates. Always respecting the capacity of the box.

Glasses and glassware: Individually wrap with packing paper and crumple paper inside large pieces to decrease empty space. Cover the boxes with plenty of packing paper, top and bottom. Also place paper in the spaces around the glasses, reducing as much as possible the chance of items colliding with each other inside the box. Place the heaviest items at the bottom of the box, with the lightest items on top.

Lamps: Lamps are one of the fragile items that are most likely to be damaged during transportation if they are not packed correctly. If they can be disassembled in pieces, lampshades should be packed (flat side down) separately with plenty of paper. The bases can be placed in a large box if necessary and bubble wrap can be used where appropriate.

Pictures/Frames: Packaging can be quite an art when it comes to art; picture frames should be placed in small or medium boxes lined with paper, and upright if they are longer than 8 inches, with crumpled paper between each piece. Wrap the frames in packing paper. Cover the frames with more packing paper to make sure the items do not shift around in the box. When moving paintings and pictures that are longer than 3 feet, you should secure them with a moving blanket, wrap them in plastic, and move them separately.

Televisions: Flat screen televisions are extremely fragile and delicate when transporting, for this we must disassemble the equipment as similar as when it came in its box from the factory, starting by removing all the cables and accessories and then storing them in a clearly labeled box. Wrap the display in a soft moving blanket and secure it around the device with packing tape. Finally, place it inside the box and close it with masking tape. Make sure the box is the correct size for your TV.

‍Special items: For those objects with unusual shapes, protruding and above all fragile, it is important to take into account the shape and size of the piece, as well as handles or protruding pieces that can break easily. The piece is completely wrapped in bubble wrap, securing with tape, then the object is placed between two pieces of flexible cardboard and the ends are then folded over to meet and taped.

When it comes to fragile items, it is time to be kind with the materials we have, so tape the entire piece if necessary. You want the fragile item to be snug and stable. Then place the part in a paper-lined box that is roughly the same size as the object, placing crumpled paper in any spaces, and lastly, remember to note on the box that it contains FRAGILE contents, so it will be easier to remind the shipper to this is something they should be careful about.
